CHRLA (The Center for Human Rights Legal Aid) is a non-governmental organization, established in 1994, to provide legal assistance and representation, free of charge, to victims of human rights violations in Egypt, regardless of their gender, nationality, religion, or political affiliation, or the individual or organization accused of the infringement.
Providing legal advice to victims of human rights violations
Filing lawsuits on behalf of victims of violations
Legally representing defendants or initiating litigation
Establishing a network of volunteer lawyers to pursue CHRLA cases
Documenting information concerning legislation and judicial rulings that address human rights issues
Filing suits contesting the legality of unconstitutional legislation with the aim of bringing national legislation into line with international covenants and conventions to which Egypt is a signatory
Conducting research into Egyptian law and its consistency with international human rights covenants and conventions
Establishing a human rights library containing legal research on human rights and other information concerning legal rights and freedoms
Raising individuals' awareness of their legal rights, in particular through a series of publications - 'Know Your Rights' and 'What to do if … ?'
Creating a strong network of local and international organizations concerned with all aspects of safeguarding human rights to coordinate activities for the benefit of victims of violations
